PRESS RELEASE

The Potters’ Society of Australia is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its journal Pottery in Australia with a national touring exhibition. Cover Story: celebrating 40 years of Pottery in Australia opens at the The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on 23 February 2002. The exhibition will feature all 116 covers of Pottery in Australia magazine published from 1962 to the present. Also on display will be a considered selection of ceramics from the Powerhouse Museum collection.

Over the past 40 years the Potters’ Society of Australia has published a journal which has attracted hundreds of articles and submissions from a broad cross section of the ceramics community both national and international. The journal started as a 26 page, B+W publication inspired by a desire to draw together practical and technical information and to promote a better understanding of technical and aesthetic issues relating to creative expression with the ceramic medium. Today the journal is a 104 page full colour publication which continues to embrace the vision of its founders. The journal provides a lasting record of the concerns, interests and passions of this broad and diverse community.

“Forty years of continuous publication is cause for celebration for any journal, its contributors, subscribers and the community it serves“ says editor,Trisha Dean.

Cover Story: celebrating 40 years of Pottery in Australia will provide audiences with a comprehensive overview of the Australian studio ceramics movement over the past four decades. “It will provide a real opportunity to showcase Australian ceramics and the role Pottery in Australia has played during a period of rapid change and development in the field of ceramics” according to Marian Howell, President of the Potters’ Society of Australia.

At the opening, The Potters’ Society of Australia will also officially launch its latest initiative the Australian Ceramics Directory linked to its website www.potteryinaustralia.com This new on-line directory for Australian ceramists, galleries and organisations will replace the printed directory that the Society has published at regular intervals in the past. The dynamic nature of digital technology will enable the most up-to-date information to be readily accessed by a global audience.
